A Hobsons Case Study
Yonkers Public Schools, the fourth-largest district in New York serving about 26,000 students (roughly 75% qualifying for free/reduced lunch), faced inconsistent college- and career-readiness across its high schools and lacked a centralized data system to track programs and outcomes. Individual schools ran their own college efforts, leaving uneven access to advising, programming, and measurable results.
Partnering with Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE) and implementing Hobsons’ Naviance, the district established college-and-career centers staffed with full-time advisors, rolled out grade-level readiness courses and a middle-school curriculum, and used Naviance for student portfolios and district-wide data tracking. The changes coincided with major gains: about 91% of seniors applied to college (up from 67%), 76% intended to enroll, and scholarship/financial aid awards rose from $23M in 2010 to over $49M in 2012, while the district gained a robust system to monitor and improve student outcomes.
