Adams 12 Five Star Schools, a large district in Thornton, Colorado, faced a dual challenge: a new state requirement for students to create Individual Career & Academic Plans (ICAP) and deep budget cuts that eliminated 13 counselor positions. The district needed to standardize counseling curriculum, streamline workflows, and maintain meaningful student support despite reduced staffing.

Adams 12 partnered with Naviance, rolling out Success Planner and Course Planner across high schools and later middle schools, using eDocs to reduce paperwork and Roadtrip Nation and career profilers to deepen student career conversations. Since implementing Naviance in 2010 the district’s graduation rate rose from 61.7% to 73.9% (about a 12-point increase), counseling positions were restored, a District Counseling Coordinator was hired, and decision-making became more data-driven.
