A Hitachi Vantara Case Study
Usborne Publishing, a growing UK children’s book publisher, faced an unsustainable data-protection regime: a mix of repository and tape backups that required four full repository backups a year, constant incremental jobs, and would have needed costly bandwidth upgrades to back up remote offices. Seeking a centrally managed, scalable solution to protect every workstation locally and remotely, Usborne turned to Hitachi Vantara and deployed Hitachi Data Instance Manager (HDIM).
Hitachi Vantara implemented HDIM to perform block-level backups, create multiple replicated repositories (with local repositories for remote offices), and enforce efficient backup policies. The result was a dramatic shrink in backup and restore times—moving from 24/7 backup operations to fully completed, replicated backups within an evening—plus significant deduplication (over 7 TB backed up with a 4 TB unique footprint on the storage server) and bare-metal restores of typical machines in about 45 minutes. Hitachi Vantara’s solution eliminated the need for bandwidth upgrades, reduced storage requirements, and increased ICT productivity with a more robust, “bulletproof” repository.
