A Hitachi Vantara Case Study
South West Water, the Exeter-based utility serving 1.7 million customers across Cornwall and Devon, faced stringent regulatory standards, aging infrastructure, and siloed data that hindered operational agility and compliance. Hitachi Vantara was engaged to help South West Water better leverage its existing SCADA, GIS, sensor and telemetry data through a cloud-based IoT analytics and business intelligence platform (built on Microsoft Azure) to inventory, integrate and prioritize data for faster, more informed decision making.
Hitachi Vantara implemented a centralized data lake, industry data model and near‑real‑time dashboards to enable predictive maintenance and automated decision support. As a result, South West Water improved regulatory compliance and avoided penalties, responded faster to three pollution incidents, reduced customer leakage cases by 24%, gained near‑real‑time visibility across 165 sites and ~3,000 telemetry points (analyzing tens of millions of rows of data), and began predicting equipment failures to lower maintenance costs.
