Shandong Telecom (China Telecom) Manages Rapidly Growing Unstructured Data With Hitachi Content Platform

Shandong Telecom, part of China Telecom, was struggling with rapidly growing unstructured data (CDRs, voice calls, scanned financial files) driven by 4G traffic; its Veritas NetBackup-to-tape environment caused long backup and recovery times, rising tape and software costs, and risk to key systems like MBOSS. To modernize data protection and archiving, Shandong Telecom engaged Hitachi Vantara and deployed Hitachi Content Platform (HCP) alongside Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform G1000 and Hitachi Universal Replicator.

Hitachi Vantara replaced part of the tape library with HCP object storage and implemented VSP G1000 replication for core systems, eliminating much of the manual big-data backup work. The solution improved backup and recovery efficiency by over 30%, ensured greater business continuity, enabled easier data sharing and faster retrieval, reduced tape purchases and staff overtime, and delivered estimated savings of US$0.9 million over three years.
