Case Study: Japan Post Bank achieves up to 1000% faster online processing with Hitachi Vantara flash storage

A Hitachi Vantara Case Study

Preview of the Japan Post Bank Case Study

Online Processing Performance Increases Up to 1000% of Previous Levels

Japan Post Bank, a major Japanese financial institution serving roughly 24,000 branches, was facing severe I/O performance bottlenecks as transactional and analytical data volumes surged—exceeding its original 60M/day design and threatening on-time batch jobs and next‑morning online availability. To address this, the bank engaged Hitachi Vantara (using Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform G1000 and Hitachi Accelerated Flash, plus assessment and Proof of Concept services such as Flash Solution for Oracle) to evaluate options and validate improvements.

Hitachi Vantara implemented the VSP G1000 with HAF and ran thorough assessment and PoC tests, proving dramatic gains: desktop database throughput up to 7.1×, single‑unit update response 33–46× faster, multiplex/batch throughput up to 14×, and online processing improvements up to ~10×. As a result, batch windows now finish well ahead of deadlines (about 4–5 hours of leeway), delays were eliminated in production since deployment, and the bank gained a reliable, high‑performance storage environment.
