MSRB Brings Greater Insights to the Municipal Securities Market With Cloud Data Lake

The Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board (MSRB), the regulator for the U.S. municipal securities market, needed to digitize and automate its market regulation, transparency and market-structure functions to extract value from complex, often unstructured securities data. To support its cloud migration and speed regulatory reporting, MSRB partnered with Hitachi Vantara, leveraging Hitachi Vantara’s Digital Insights: Modern Data Platform and Cloud Data Lake Modernization Services.

Hitachi Vantara built a composable cloud data lake and analytics platform on AWS (12‑week POC) using NLP, knowledge graphs, a search portal and AI/ML to ingest and analyze structured and unstructured disclosures. The solution delivered real‑time insights, greater automation and faster capability launches — notably, MSRB uploaded event notices over a weekend and identified 4,500 COVID‑19–related disclosures (from over 50,000 notices filed in Q1 2020), enabling rapid market reporting, improved transparency and increased operational efficiency.
