Hitachi Converged Solution Brings Virtualization and Top Performance to Russian Railways

Russian Railways, one of the world’s largest rail operators with four data centers and hundreds of thousands of users, faced rapid data growth and the need to consolidate, virtualize and modernize its infrastructure to improve scheduling, analytical reporting and financial accounting. To meet these challenges it partnered with Hitachi Vantara and deployed a converged Hitachi Unified Compute Platform for the SAP HANA Platform (UCP for SAP HANA) alongside Hitachi storage, Virtual Tape Library, Hitachi Command Suite and data protection software.

Hitachi Vantara’s converged solution virtualized workloads, accelerated analytics and streamlined backup and management, delivering dramatic performance and capacity gains: planning operations fell from 842 to 33 minutes (planning by territory from 33 to 8 minutes), a monthly cost-allocation analysis dropped from up to three days to 20 minutes, database access sped up ~300x (117s to 0.35s), SAP BW ran 5x faster, and stored data volume was cut threefold. Backup and restore became 10–15x faster with VTL and deduplication reduced backup footprint by 15–20x, consolidating roughly 915 TB of backup data and improving overall financial planning, manageability and fault tolerance under Hitachi Vantara’s platform.
