Daicel Corporation, a global manufacturer of chemical and pyrotechnical products with an automotive airbag business, faced heightened quality-control pressures after industry recalls and found manual data filtering inadequate for root-cause analysis. To address this, Daicel partnered with Hitachi Vantara to explore advanced analytics and image-based monitoring.

Hitachi Vantara implemented an image analysis system using in-depth cameras and analytics to measure front-line worker activities, derive standard behavior models from observations, and detect deviations via statistical comparison. The solution enabled prompt detection of operational failures, faster root-cause discovery and reduced time-to-discovery, improved quality and productivity, and lowered recall risk; the pilot at Daicel’s Harima plant is slated to roll out to six overseas sites with plans for a cloud-based global quality management system.
