Cost-Effective Hitachi Storage Solution Manages Data Growth for Saarland University Hospital

Saarland University Hospital (Universitätsklinikum des Saarlandes, UKS) faced exponential data growth driven largely by diagnostic imaging and a PACS that was increasing by roughly 20 TB per year, stressing performance and availability for mission‑critical systems accessed by some 3,000 users. To address these demands, the hospital worked with Hitachi Vantara (with services from partner Cristie) deploying Hitachi Adaptable Modular Storage 2500 systems and later adding Hitachi NAS Platform 3080 appliances and Hitachi TrueCopy for site mirroring.

Hitachi Vantara implemented two HNAS 3080 systems to extend the existing SAN environment, adding more than 100 TB of reliable, cost‑efficient NAS capacity and completing a no‑downtime PACS migration in March 2013. With AMS 2500 in place, HNAS 3080 capacity, and TrueCopy mirroring across two sites, the hospital gained improved performance and availability for SAP and imaging workflows, faster provisioning for other departments, and the scalable storage needed to absorb ongoing ~20 TB/year growth while maintaining clinical continuity.
