Carilion Clinic and Hitachi Data Systems Intelligently Connect the Healthcare Enterprise With a Fully Integrated Solution

Carilion Clinic, a 1,026‑bed not‑for‑profit health system in Virginia, needed a way to unify growing volumes of patient data across multiple applications, support both DICOM and non‑DICOM formats, improve mobility and EMR integration, and avoid costly “rip and replace” upgrades. To meet those challenges it selected Hitachi Vantara’s Hitachi Clinical Repository (HCR) and related Hitachi Content Platform to create a single, standards‑based repository and longitudinal patient record.

Hitachi Vantara implemented HCR to ingest and index structured and unstructured data, unify PACS, EHR/EMR and other systems, and migrate legacy records in the background. The solution now hosts over four million records, houses 95% of Carilion’s radiology data, and sustained migration speeds of roughly 225,000 records (~8 TB) per day, delivering faster real‑time access, high‑performance image retrieval, consolidated systems, reduced pre‑fetching and a foundation for clinical analytics and population health management.
