Austin Police Deploy Hitachi Insight Group Solution to Serve and Protect With Greater Visibility and Connected Intelligence

The Austin Police Department faced the challenge of stretching limited budgets while implementing a data-driven, intel-led public safety camera program (HALO) to deter, detect and investigate crime in hot spots such as Rundberg and downtown entertainment districts. APD selected Hitachi Vantara’s solution—deploying Hitachi Visualization Platform (HVP) edge-capture camera pods and the Hitachi Visualization Suite (HVS)—to provide rugged, scalable cameras, edge analytics and cloud-managed monitoring.

Hitachi Vantara implemented HVP cameras with features like license-plate recognition, gunshot detection and integration with CAD/911 and third-party cameras, and deployed a real-time crime center using HVS. The rollout began with 41 cameras, expanded APD’s viewing access to about 1,000 cameras citywide, produced 108 captured incidents in a quarterly report, improved situational awareness and officer response, and generated usable video evidence—results that prompted Phase III expansion and further HVP/HVS purchases from Hitachi Vantara.
