A Hitachi Vantara Case Study
Seattle Children’s Hospital needed a reliable, scalable storage platform to support a mission‑critical, 24/7 virtual desktop infrastructure and to replace legacy systems with simpler administration and higher I/O. They engaged Hitachi Vantara and deployed Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform with Hitachi NAS Platform 3080 and Hitachi Adaptable Modular Storage 2100, using software such as Hitachi Dynamic Tiering, Hitachi Tiered Storage Manager and Hitachi Tuning Manager, plus planning and deployment services from Hitachi Data Systems Global Solution Services.
Hitachi Vantara implemented a centralized VSP-based environment (with HNAS 3080 for shared images and AMS 2100 behind a VSP at the secondary site), Dynamic Tiering, Universal Replicator and tuning tools to simplify management and enable disaster recovery. The solution has already supported 2,000 thin/zero clients with a planned footprint of 5,000–6,000 virtual desktops, delivered a lower total cost of ownership, eliminated the need for additional storage staff, and produced measurable efficiencies — about 50% less footprint, cooling and power costs and roughly 65% lower costs related to the AMS 2100 — while centralizing licensing, improving performance and streamlining replication.
