Telecommunications Service Provider Builds Cloud Storage Infrastructure With Hitachi Storage Technology

Heilongjiang Unicom, the China Unicom branch in Heilongjiang Province, needed a cloud computing and virtual desktop infrastructure that could unify device management, improve security and reliability, and lower both acquisition and operating costs. For its cloud storage and VDI project, the company turned to Hitachi Data Systems and Hitachi Unified Storage VM with Hitachi NAS Platform to support a tiered, highly flexible storage architecture.

Hitachi Data Systems implemented a SAN and NAS-based cloud storage solution that virtualized existing storage, centralized it into a shared pool, and supported high-performance desktop and file workloads. The results included 2x performance versus competing storage systems and a 50% reduction in investment cost, while also improving scalability, storage utilization, and data protection for Heilongjiang Unicom.
