Mutual & Federal Gains Efficiency and Frees Up Crucial Resources With Hitachi Data Systems

Mutual & Federal, South Africa’s oldest short-term insurer, needed to keep expanding its data center storage as the business grew, while reducing risk, cost, and complexity. As a long-time Hitachi Data Systems customer, it evaluated several vendors but needed a scalable storage strategy to support increasing capacity and critical month-end processing.

Hitachi Data Systems implemented a new Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform solution, using virtualization and services such as Hitachi Dynamic Tiering and Hitachi Remote Replication to replace five storage units with two VSP systems. The result was much faster monthly batch runs, dropping from 14 hours to 4 hours and allowing month-end processing to move from weekends to a single evening. Hitachi Data Systems also helped improve scalability, reduce power use and carbon emissions, and support estimated environmental savings of over US$929,981 and a 1,749-ton reduction in CO2.
