Denmark’s Region Nord Transforms Healthcare With Cost- and Energy-Efficient Technology Innovations

Region Nordjylland, the regional council for northern Denmark, needed to modernize a growing healthcare IT environment serving hospitals, staff, and 15,000 end users across multiple sites. Facing 44% annual data growth, rising backup demands, siloed systems, and pressure to support mission-critical medical applications, it turned to Hitachi Data Systems for a unified, converged infrastructure built on storage, virtualization, and file services.

Hitachi Data Systems implemented Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform, Hitachi NAS Platform, Hitachi Compute Blades, and related software and services to virtualize and consolidate the environment. The result was faster access to health data, stronger availability and security, and major efficiency gains: over 85% of servers virtualized, 451 new virtual servers commissioned, 75% of clinicians on VDI in year one, login times cut in half, annual energy savings of more than 1.2 million kWh, and 30% lower energy use versus SAS drives.
