Daicel, a global manufacturer of chemical and pyrotechnical products, wanted to improve manufacturing quality and performance analysis in its automotive airbag operations. Facing a high-risk industry with major recalls, Daicel needed a better way than manual data filtering to identify the root causes of product defects, and turned to Hitachi Data Systems for advanced analytics and manufacturing insight.

Hitachi Data Systems and Daicel implemented an image analysis system using in-depth cameras to monitor worker activities and detect operational failures and deviations on the production line. The solution improved early discovery of quality issues, sped up root-cause identification, and supported better quality, productivity, and recall risk reduction; after piloting at the Harima plant in Japan, it was slated to roll out to six overseas sites.
