Office of Inspector General - Customer Case Study

One of the nation’s largest not‑for‑profit senior care providers — operating 240 U.S. facilities with about 20,000 employees and 25,000 patients — faced a federal audit that uncovered an employee with outstanding sanctions and resulted in a $500,000 fine. Despite decentralized screening and a background vendor, the organization had gaps from reporting time lags, aliases and transient workers, and human error that left it vulnerable to OIG employment‑screening violations.

The organization partnered with HireRight to centralize and automate screening through an integrated web platform tied to payroll and applicant tracking, broaden criminal searches to seven years of residences, and run multi‑database sanctions checks (OIG LEIE, GSA EPLS) with a central dashboard and a dedicated review team. After screening the entire workforce, the system flagged about a dozen potential hits and led to the release of five ineligible employees, delivering faster, more consistent compliance, easier internal auditing and greater peace of mind.
