Emerson cuts hardware needs to zero with Hilscher

Emerson, a global technology company and leading manufacturer of pneumatic components, faced the challenge of simplifying digital transformation for its customers. They sought to integrate standardized IIoT protocols like OPC UA directly into their AVENTICS™ valve systems to enable data access and optimize processes without requiring complex system changes or additional hardware. Partnering with vendor Hilscher, Emerson utilized their netX technology to address this interoperability challenge.

The solution implemented by Hilscher was the integration of their netX 90 communication controller with IoT solution firmware into the valve system's Advanced Electronic System (AES). This provided preinstalled OPC UA functionality for both PROFINET and EtherNet/IP, eliminating the need for extra hardware like gateways. The results included simplified IIoT adoption, the ability to perform preliminary data analysis without disrupting the PLC, and increased flexibility for end-users. Hilscher's technology helped Emerson become the first pneumatic valve supplier to offer integrated OPC UA, saving users integration costs and enabling faster time-to-market.
