The Angola National ID Card Program – A Cornerstone of Citizenship and a Building

The government of Angola faced the challenge of replacing outdated, insecure paper IDs and creating a central citizen database for its large, dispersed population following a civil war. To combat counterfeiting and ID theft, they partnered with HID Global to implement a new national ID card system using LaserCard® optical security media technology.

HID Global's solution involved deploying 243 fixed and mobile enrollment centers to issue durable, secure cards capable of storing extensive biometric and personal data. This provided citizens with quick, over-the-counter issuance and a reliable form of identification. The program successfully enrolled over 6.5 million citizens, significantly improving national security and enabling access to essential services like banking and employment.
