Maine School Districts Help Students Fit In with ID Cards

The Maine School Administrative District (MSAD) 58, a rural school district serving 1,000 students, faced a challenge in its lunch program where color-coded punch cards publicly identified students eligible for free or reduced-price meals, causing embarrassment. To create a more discreet system, the district turned to HID Global and implemented Fargo DTC300 and DTC400 Direct-to-Card Printer/Encoders.

HID Global's solution allowed MSAD 58 to issue uniform ID cards with a bar code on the back to confidentially store a student's lunch program status. This eliminated the visual stigma and ensured all students appeared equal. The results were significant, with the cards now also being used for a debit system, library checkouts, and as emergency contact cards. The success in MSAD 58 led the neighboring MSAD 9 district to also adopt HID Global's Fargo printers to expand their own ID card programs.
