Case Study: Southern Ohio Medical Center improves patient medication safety with HID Global access control

A HID Global Case Study

Preview of the Southern Ohio Medical Center Case Study

How HID Global improved workflow and efficiency for the medical staff at the Southern Ohio Medical Center

Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) sought to modernize its medication administration to enhance patient safety and reduce preventable errors. Their challenges included integrating a secure access control system with their existing Electronic Medication Administration Record (eMAR) and replacing unreliable magnetic stripe employee badges. They partnered with HID Global and its OEM partner SecuriCo, Inc. to implement a solution using HID EdgeReader™ ER40 networked wall stations and iCLASS® smart cards.

The implemented solution provided centralized, secure access to medication wall stations, controlling who could access drugs and tracking all activity. This HID Global technology significantly improved the accuracy of patient medication dispensing and streamlined workflow for the nursing staff by reducing the time spent retrieving medications. Due to the success of the initial 73 units, SOMC expanded the deployment with an additional 102 HID EdgeReaders throughout its new facility.
