The City of Newport News, Virginia, Connects Live Video Surveillance to Dispatch System & Workflows

The City of Newport News, Virginia, faced rising crime in its southern precinct and had deployed citywide CCTV cameras to improve public safety. However, operators at the city’s PSAP found monitoring many live feeds cumbersome and inefficient, and dispatching police, fire, and EMS based on video observations was slow and error-prone. To solve this, Newport News turned to Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division for an integrated solution.

Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division deployed a video surveillance application integrated directly with the PSAP’s computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system so dispatchers receive instant notifications, see the closest live feeds on the CAD map, view multiple cameras on one workstation, record/archive video, and create CAD events from video observations. The integration improved situational awareness, enabled quicker dispatches, reduced the need for extra patrols, and supported multi-agency collaboration — building on earlier camera-driven crime reductions and helping operators get the right responders to incidents faster.
