South Carolina Department of Transportation - Customer Case Study

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) manages safe movement of people and goods through an oversize/overweight (OS/OW) permit office that issues roughly 70,000 permits a year (about 250–300 per day). Facing a manual, multi-system routing process and loss of institutional knowledge as staff retire, SCDOT sought an automated solution and turned to Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division, building on its existing Integrated Transportation Management System (ITMS) and selecting Hexagon’s Automated Routing for Oversize/Overweight (OS/OW) Vehicles application.

Hexagon implemented an integrated routing system that uses ITMS roadway inventory to auto-generate safe, turn-by-turn routes with mileage between maneuvers, enforces bridge height/weight restrictions, and consolidates permitting from three systems into one. As a result, SCDOT can expedite processing of its ~70,000 annual permits, reduce human error and training time, produce daily/monthly/yearly accountability reports (including permits by weight/height and processing time), and quickly identify routes for emergency response — all delivered by Hexagon’s solution.
