A Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division Case Study
SISPI SpA, the Municipality of Palermo’s system operator, faced delays and inefficiencies in maintaining the city’s public green spaces—historic gardens, parks and urban greenery—due to limited resources and lack of timely information on vegetative health. To improve sustainability, optimize irrigation and manage drought- and fire-related vegetative stress, SISPI turned to solutions based on Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division technology, notably the M.App Enterprise platform (implemented by partner Planetek Italia as the Urban Green Spaces Monitoring Tool).
Built on Hexagon’s M.App Enterprise and using Hexagon’s Spatial Modeler, the Urban Green Spaces Monitoring Tool processes Copernicus Sentinel‑2 data to calculate a Vegetation Stress Index from SAVI, LAI and NDVI and presents results in an interactive dashboard. The Hexagon-based solution let SISPI SpA prioritize interventions, reduce ground-inspection and maintenance costs, and better target irrigation during droughts; it also produced measurable stress metrics (e.g., Decreasing Index 0.86; SAVI 0.75; LAI 0.92; NDVI 0.92) that quantify vegetative condition and support more sustainable urban green-space management.
