Shelter Associates, a Pune-based civil society organization, works to convert urban informal settlements into safer, cleaner housing with basic services. Facing severe sanitation gaps and the absence of spatially accurate, up-to-date data (city plans often relied on secondary sources and fewer than 30% of households had in-home sanitation), Shelter Associates adopted GeoMedia from Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division to map informal settlements, household sanitation status, drainage networks and other infrastructure.

Using GeoMedia from Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division, Shelter Associates built precise, real-time GIS datasets published on Google Earth and shared with Urban Local Bodies. The platform enabled household-level targeting and prioritization, better coordination of community mobilization, and accurate monitoring of toilet construction (for example mapping Balajinagar’s 2,357 houses, drainage lines and community toilet blocks), and improved planning transparency across Pimpri–Chinchwad, Navi Mumbai and Kolhapur—giving ULBs actionable data to plan interventions and track impact.
