Case Study: RAG Aktiengesellschaft achieves 50% faster abandoned-mine monitoring and unified aerial-data cataloging with Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division

A Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division Case Study

Preview of the RAG Aktiengesellschaft Case Study

RAG Aktiengesellschaft teamed with GEOSYSTEMS GmbH and uses Hexagon technology to automate mine monitoring workflows

RAG Aktiengesellschaft, the company responsible for monitoring former coal mines in Germany’s Ruhr region, faced the challenge of detecting sinkholes and subsidence across vast, vegetated terrain using airborne laser scanning and high-resolution aerial imagery. Managing petabytes of data, fragmented flight planning and disparate delivery systems meant RAG needed a unified catalog, automated photogrammetric processing and high-performance distribution; it turned to Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division technologies, including ERDAS IMAGINE, IMAGINE Photogrammetry and ERDAS APOLLO.

Using Hexagon's solutions and partner GEOSYSTEMS GmbH, RAG deployed the Luftbildarchiv Admin Tool powered by ERDAS APOLLO to automate the full aerial-image processing cycle, manage petabyte-scale archives and preserve aerotriangulation for detailed stereo analysis. The implementation standardized workflows accessible via desktop and web clients, enabled centimeter-accurate digital terrain models and orthophotos, and cut aerial survey processing time by 50%, demonstrating Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division capabilities to scale and accelerate mine-monitoring operations.
