Case Study: Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM) achieves optimized digital management of multiutility networks with Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division

A Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division Case Study

Preview of the Empresas Publicas de Medellin (EPM) Case Study

Powerful multiutility geospatial technology enhances and optimizes digital management of networks

Empresas Publicas de Medellin (EPM), the state-owned multiutility serving Medellín and surrounding municipalities, faced fragmented, outdated graphical data (CAD files, shapefiles, scanned images) across electricity, water, gas and telecommunications that hindered network management, access and updates. To integrate its networks with business systems and gain geolocation-based intelligence for locating faults, analyzing efficiency and simulating changes, EPM selected Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division’s advanced utility GIS solutions and geospatial management platform, including Intergraph G/Technology (now HxGN NetWorks).

Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division delivered a phased implementation—pilot modelling, massive data conversion (SIGMA/FRAMME), refinement and migration to Intergraph G/Technology/HxGN NetWorks—creating standardized, centralized network models and integrations with commercial, operations and asset-management systems. The rollout enabled EPM to digitize 100% of its maps (earning Hexagon’s “100% Club” award), provide a single authoritative source for multiple departments, speed fault location and reporting, and improve operational agility and data accessibility across the utility.
