Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Improves Incident Response with Computer-Aided Dispatch

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, which operates and maintains 546 miles of toll roads and extensive facilities, needed to improve dispatch accuracy, emergency response and reporting. Its legacy CAD used broad area response zones despite the Commission’s milepost-based tenth-mile accuracy, and it lacked ad hoc reporting and mapping—creating slow, imprecise responses and limited incident-trend analysis. To address this, the Commission selected Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division.

Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division deployed its CAD and business intelligence solutions, integrated existing traffic cameras and 1,029 emergency call boxes, and added a custom “Lane Status Monitor.” Data loading that was estimated as a three-person, three-year project was completed in about three weeks (bulk loading from a master spreadsheet took less than a day), and the overall implementation, testing and training finished in nine months. The result: improved dispatch efficiency and reduced incident response times across roughly 7,000 incidents per month, automated ad hoc and scheduled reporting, and better situational awareness for multiple internal departments.
