Case Study: Lufthansa achieves real-time inflight updates and route optimization with Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division

A Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division Case Study

Preview of the Lufthansa Case Study

Lufthansa Systems Relies on Data Visualization for Real-Time Updates Inflight

Lufthansa faced growing operational complexity from unpredictable weather, higher traffic density and pressure to cut costs and emissions while keeping passengers safe. To provide pilots and dispatchers with real‑time situational awareness, Lufthansa Systems extended its Lido/Flight product with the WINDS decision‑support system and turned to Luciad visualization technology from Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division.

Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division supplied Luciad geospatial visualization embedded in Lido/Flight WINDS, enabling the fusion of dozens of dynamic data layers, 2D/3D/4D views and live feeds. The implementation delivers about 11 million position updates per day, supports some 70 overlay maps, reduces trajectory optimization to roughly 30 seconds, helps avoid costly diversions and improves fuel and route planning—today nearly half of European flights are calculated with Lido/Flight WINDS, demonstrating measurable operational and safety gains.
