KWS SAAT SE & Co. KGaA helps farmers optimize seed sowing with satellite imagery and yield prediction

KWS SAAT SE & Co. KGaA, the world’s fourth-largest seed producer, needed to move from manual, experience-based seed drilling to a scalable, data-driven approach that can handle terabytes of satellite imagery and produce reliable yield predictions across many countries. To do this it partnered with GEOSYSTEMS GmbH and Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division, leveraging Hexagon tools such as ERDAS IMAGINE and ERDAS APOLLO to process Sentinel‑2 imagery and build reproducible spatial models.

Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division implemented an automated pipeline (with GEOSYSTEMS’ IMAGINE NoClouds and ATCOR Workflow add-ons) that pre-processes roughly 5,000 tiles of Sentinel‑2 data, runs up to 10 parallel jobs, creates mosaics and delivers results in KWS’s AWS-hosted myKWS portal. The solution produces fast yield‑potential zone maps and site-specific sowing recommendations that are sent directly to seed drills, turning guesswork into scalable, reproducible advice and enabling farmers to optimize seed use and maximize yields.
