A Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division Case Study
Hydro Ottawa, the third-largest municipally owned electric utility in Ontario, launched a Grid Transformation Action Plan to build a more robust high-speed communications backbone for its smart grid. To upgrade and expand fiber, add wireless links for remote devices, and reliably track buried cable locations and inventory for safety and reporting, Hydro Ottawa partnered with Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division and adopted Intergraph G/Technology Fiber Optic Works.
Hexagon's solution let Hydro Ottawa model and manage fiber assets and connectivity alongside its electric network, giving full tracing, fault analysis, project tracking and circuit visibility while eliminating spreadsheet-based tracking. Using Intergraph G/Technology Fiber Optic Works, Hydro Ottawa achieved a fully connected, geo-referenced fiber record, improved operational transparency and efficiency, and moved from a 9,600 bits-per-second communications network to a network capable of 1 gigabyte per second, positioning the utility for future growth.
