How Hexagon’s cities and nations solutions helped EPB drive value in public utilities

EPB, the city-owned electric power and telecommunications company in Chattanooga, Tennessee, needed to modernize its infrastructure to better serve future customer and business needs. To support this, Hexagon’s Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division provided an advanced utility GIS for electric and fibre network design, engineering, and management.

Hexagon’s solution helped EPB build a fibre-to-the-home smart grid with shared electric and fibre network data, supporting automated provisioning and improved outage response. The rollout included 90 miles of transport fibre, 800 miles of feeder fibre, 3,200 miles of distribution fibre, and 1,170 automated interruptible switches, contributing to better reliability, connectivity, and customer service. A 2021 study found the smart grid delivered $2.7 billion in community benefit in its first decade.
