Case Study: Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland (OSNI) achieves faster national map updates with Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division's integrated GeoMedia/ImageStation platform

A Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division Case Study

Preview of the OSNI Case Study

From Raw Data to National Map Updates with a Single Platform

OSNI (Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland), part of Land & Property Services, needed to modernize its national mapping workflow after adopting a new OSNI Data Model. The agency was operating two siloed systems—one for stereo photogrammetry and another for data attribution/validation—and required a single GIS platform able to perform aerial triangulation, stereo editing, DEM/DSM generation and ortho production, operate within the OSNI Fusion model, and integrate with existing workflow and high‑resolution aerial imagery. Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division (implemented via partner IMGS) and its GeoMedia/ImageStation tools were selected to meet these needs.

IMGS implemented an end-to-end platform built on Hexagon’s GeoMedia and ImageStation, integrated with 1Spatial’s 1SMS workflow and FME Server validation, delivering a single software package to process imagery, run aerial triangulation, generate DEM/DSM, and produce ortho photography. Hexagon's solution consolidated previously siloed processes, drove automation and sub‑process efficiencies, proved cost‑effective, and shortened the time between data creation and operational use—enabling timely updates to Northern Ireland’s national ortho imagery and large‑scale vector map.
