EPB Implements Its Own Smart Grid with Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure Solutions

EPB of Chattanooga, one of the largest publicly owned electric utilities in the U.S., needed to modernize its electric system with a fiber‑optic smart grid to improve outage detection and restoration and to offer next‑generation broadband services. EPB selected Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division, deploying Intergraph G/Technology with Fiber Optic Works (and G/Electric enhancements) to design, model and manage its integrated electric and fiber networks.

Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division implemented G/Technology‑based electric and fiber models that enabled automated provisioning of customer ONTs and automated switching for faster restoration. The rollout included 90 miles of transport, 800 miles of feeder and 3,200 miles of distribution fiber (serving more than 39,000 FTTH customers), delivered 1 Gbps service to over 150,000 homes and businesses, modeled and supported 1,170 intellirupters, and—using Hexagon’s solutions—helped save more than six million customer outage minutes through automated restoration.
