Enersource Simplifies Operations Center with Smart Grid Technology

Enersource, the second-largest electricity supplier in Ontario serving more than 185,000 customers across a 5,000 km network, faced operational complexity from multiple disparate control-room systems (GIS, SCADA, outage and work-management tools) and relied on paper wall boards and maps. To modernize operations and better leverage its GIS data, Enersource partnered with Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division to implement a smart grid solution including Hexagon’s outage management system (OMS) and an Integrated Operating Model (IOM).

Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division integrated Hexagon utility applications with Siemens’ DSPF, two-way SCADA interfaces and expanded OMS functionality to give operators a single command-and-control interface that uses GIS data for 917,000 assets. The solution consolidated monitoring and dispatch, eliminated paper processes, improved outage detection and remediation, and made normal and storm-time operations more efficient—resulting in more reliable service for Enersource customers and a phased rollout that began with the OMS in September 2008.
