A Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division Case Study
The District Department of Transportation faced a costly, manual process for approving thousands of oversize/overweight (OS/OW) single‑haul permits each year in Washington, D.C., where narrow streets, bridge and overpass restrictions, and coordination with federal agencies make routing complex. To solve this, the District Department of Transportation selected Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division’s automated route planning and restriction management software, integrated with DDOT’s permitting system to replace paper and manual GIS checks.
Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division deployed a web‑based Restriction Manager and Route Planner that cross‑references vehicle/load data with permanent and temporary restrictions, automates stakeholder approvals, delivers detailed driver directions and alerts, and tracks routes for reporting. The solution streamlined routing and expedited permit approvals for thousands of OS/OW permits, reduced manual review and re‑routing risk, improved traffic flow and public safety, and — as DDOT notes — avoiding even one bridge strike a year would justify the return on investment.
