Case Study: MITNETZ STROM (German regional utility) achieves unified smart‑grid GIS and centralized network data with Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division

A Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division Case Study

Preview of the MITNETZ STROM Case Study

Advanced GIS technology powers smart grid success

MITNETZ STROM, the largest regional distribution network in eastern Germany serving about 2.3 million people across nearly 74,000 km of lines, needed to aggregate, integrate and standardize dispersed technical and spatial data and capture missing information to meet EU-driven smart grid objectives and support long-term planning. To build a central GIS platform for operations and planning, MITNETZ STROM selected Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division to deploy HxGN NetWorks and an electricity data model.

Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division implemented HxGN NetWorks as an open, standards-based relational data warehouse, integrating around 10 million assets and enabling mobile field capture, role-based access, BI analytics and secure web services. The solution now processes roughly 80% of asset location requests via a secure intranet, supports network load and low-voltage analyses and a solar power register for planning, and has delivered a positive return on investment alongside decade-long improvements in data integrity, operations and strategic decision-making.
