A Hexagon Case Study
ZSM Zertz + Scheid Maschinenbau, a German manufacturer of precision parts for aerospace and other industries, faced the challenge of machining expensive forged blanks for Airbus A320 nose gear with high precision. The risk of scrap parts due to manual measurement errors and the increasing customer demand for integrated, documented quality assurance threatened their ability to secure new orders. To address this, they partnered with vendor Hexagon to implement m&h touch probes and 3D Form Inspect software for on-machine measurement.
Hexagon's solution allowed ZSM to measure workpieces directly on the machine using the Best Fit software module to adapt machining programs to the unique contours of each forged blank. This eliminated manual setting, minimized human error, and automated the documentation process. The results included a significant reduction in expensive rejects, faster machining times, and the elimination of manual transfer errors. This capability was crucial for ZSM, with production manager Klaus Mands stating that the Hexagon technology helped them avoid errors and secure orders they otherwise would have lost.
