Utility GIS Meets Infrastructure, Customer Needs for Ireland’s Electricity Distribution System

ESB Networks, the operator of Ireland's electricity distribution system, faced a significant challenge as its 25-year-old, unsupported geographic information system (GIS) posed risks to its operations, field crew safety, and service to over 2 million customers. To mitigate this risk and future-proof its business, ESB Networks contracted with vendor Hexagon to implement a new, advanced utility GIS solution.

Hexagon worked for three years to deploy its enterprise GIS, which was integrated with ESB's corporate IT infrastructure and a custom electricity data model. The solution provided approximately 1,000 users with three simultaneous network views and was seamlessly integrated with twelve third-party data sources and an outage management system. The results included improved operational efficiency, enhanced safety for field crews, and a strong technological foundation that supported new business ventures like high-speed broadband delivery.
