A Hexagon Case Study
TVL Toeleveringsbedrijf Van Landuyt NV, a Belgian manufacturer of large transmission housings for wind turbines, faced a challenge with quality control. As production grew to 900 housings annually, outsourcing the high-precision measurement of complex, hard-to-reach bore geometries to a service provider in Germany became too costly and inefficient. They needed an in-house solution for verifiable measurements with extremely tight tolerances, such as ±25 microns on a 650 mm bore.
The vendor, Hexagon, provided a Leitz PMM-F high-precision coordinate measuring machine (CMM) and QUINDOS software. The solution included a temperature-compensated CMM installed directly on the shop floor and a dynamic tool changer rack to access all measurement points. This allowed TVL to perform reproducible measurements with a proven uncertainty of 2.5 μm in just 30 minutes per housing. The results eliminated transportation costs, enabled around-the-clock just-in-time measurement, and provided a common software platform across all their equipment, reducing training and maintenance costs.
