A Hexagon Case Study
Thöni Manufacturing GmbH, a German manufacturer of large-format precision components, faced a challenge with its aging coordinate measuring machine. While the 19-year-old Leitz PMM machine was still accurate, the supply of spare parts was no longer assured, creating a risk for their quality assurance process integrated into production. This prompted them to seek a solution from the vendor, Hexagon.
Hexagon implemented a comprehensive retrofit that replaced nearly all of the machine's core components, including the wiring, control cabinet, software, and probe head. The solution utilized Hexagon's LSP-S2 probe head and upgraded the software to QUINDOS 7. This modernization was completed in just four weeks, minimizing downtime. The results included faster measuring and programming times, more stable probing with heavier styli, and enhanced reporting capabilities. The upgrade eliminated potential bottlenecks at a fraction of the six-figure cost of a new machine, ensuring the system is future-proof for Thöni's growing production needs.
