A Hexagon Case Study
The power saw manufacturer Stihl faced a challenge in quality assurance, where measuring precision parts like crankshafts and connecting rods was a time-consuming bottleneck. Their existing process required multiple machines and frequent reclamping, demanding highly skilled personnel and leading to operator-dependent results. To refine this process for greater speed, economy, and reproducibility, Stihl partnered with vendor Hexagon for a new metrology solution.
Hexagon implemented its ultra-high accuracy Leitz PMM-C coordinate measuring machine, configured with custom QUINDOS measuring software. This solution automated the measurement process, drastically reducing inspection time for a crankshaft from over 30 minutes to just 7 minutes while ensuring maximum accuracy and absolute repeatability. The results provided Stihl with significant time savings, eliminated operator influence, and even allowed the machine to be repurposed for calibrating other testing equipment.
