Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute - Customer Case Study

The Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute faced the significant challenge of documenting ancient Deer Stone monoliths in remote Mongolia, where extreme temperatures, difficult transport, and ambient light interfered with creating high-resolution 3D records. They partnered with Hexagon, whose AICON SmartScan portable 3D scanner was selected for its precision and ability to capture colour texture under these demanding field conditions.

Hexagon's solution involved using the robust, structured-light scanning system to digitize fifteen monuments over three weeks, often working at night to ensure ideal scanning conditions. The project was a success; the scanner delivered dependable, high-resolution 3D data despite the harsh environment. This allowed for the creation of detailed digital archives for research and the production of replicas for display, making a permanent contribution to the preservation of these culturally significant stones.
