A Hexagon Case Study
Renishaw GmbH, a world leader in additive manufacturing, faced a challenge while producing a complex titanium wheel carrier for a Formula Student team. The part exhibited cracks at the support structure interface and significant distortion during the printing process, issues that are costly and time-consuming to rectify. To achieve a "first-time-right" print, Renishaw turned to vendor Hexagon and its Simufact Additive software for a solution.
Using Hexagon's Simufact Additive simulation software, Renishaw's process was optimized. The solution involved calibrating the machine's inherent strains and then using the software to redesign the part with four new inserts and an improved support structure. This new design successfully eliminated the cracking and significantly reduced the distortion, as confirmed by highly accurate simulation predictions that matched physical measurements. This allowed Renishaw to produce a high-quality, lightweight part efficiently.
