Case Study: Sienna Ecad Technologies optimizes liquid-cooled battery pack design with Hexagon Cradle CFD

A Hexagon Case Study

Preview of the Sienna Ecad Technologies Case Study

Sienna ECAD used Cradle CFD to simulate and arrive at the most optimum thermal management for a liquid-cooled battery pack

Sienna Ecad Technologies, a leading PCB design engineering company, faced the challenge of optimizing the thermal management for a liquid-cooled battery pack. Their goals were to prevent uneven cooling from flow imbalances, study the effect of different coolants, and determine the most efficient cooling jacket configuration and flow rate. To address this, they turned to vendor Hexagon and utilized its Cradle CFD software, specifically the scFLOW module, for their simulation work.

Using Hexagon's Cradle scFLOW, the Sienna ECAD team was able to identify an optimal design. They determined that a glycol-water coolant mixture provided more uniform flow than water alone. Through simulation, they found that a counter-flow cooling jacket configuration was more efficient than a parallel-flow one and that an optimum coolant flow rate of 2 LPM achieved a temperature of approximately 26.7°C. This allowed them to design a battery pack with the right coolant, best flow configuration, and optimum flow rate, achieving a high level of accuracy and efficiency in their simulation process.
