RWE Deutschland AG - Customer Case Study

The customer, RWE Deutschland AG, an electricity and gas utility, faced the challenge of managing and disseminating vast amounts of decentralized geospatial data across the entire country of Germany. Their goal was to keep this national-scale mapping data current and deliver it rapidly to various regional departments and third parties, all while operating within low-bandwidth environments and serving multiple different GIS systems. To address this, they partnered with vendor Hexagon.

Hexagon implemented a solution centered on its ERDAS APOLLO data management system and ERDAS IMAGINE for processing. A key achievement was using this technology to compress 38 terabytes of raw imagery data into a single 1-terabyte ECW file without losing quality. This file was then served efficiently via fast-streaming protocols, drastically reducing required network bandwidth and IT resources. The Hexagon solution provided reliable, 24/7 access to the data for a heterogeneous set of users and systems, enabling smarter decision-making across the organization.
