A Hexagon Case Study
RTD Manufacturing, a machine shop based in Michigan, faced the critical challenge of needing to pivot its production to survive the manufacturing shutdowns at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The family-run company, which serves diverse industries including aerospace and medical, needed to leverage its existing flexibility to quickly begin producing personal protective equipment like face masks and shields. Their existing technology, the SURFCAM Traditional CAM software from Hexagon, was key to enabling this adaptability.
The solution from Hexagon, SURFCAM Traditional, provided RTD with powerful programming and simulation tools. The shop utilized specialized cycles like Waveform and TrueMill for rapid and safe material removal and relied heavily on toolpath templates to apply best practices and drastically cut programming time. This allowed RTD to efficiently machine complex parts and successfully pivot its operations, producing several thousand masks per day and keeping its doors open during a critical period.
