A Hexagon Case Study
Wikov, a Czech manufacturer of high-end gearboxes, faced a challenge from a customer who required that their new tram gearbox emit no more than 100 dB(A) of airborne noise. While Wikov had strong technical expertise, their existing simulation tools were not suitable for this specific NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) analysis. To meet the rigid deadline and ensure the design was acceptable, they engaged Hexagon for its Romax software and expert consultancy support.
The Hexagon team used Romax Spectrum to create a baseline model and perform acoustic analysis, identifying opportunities for improvement in the gear micro-geometry and housing design. After implementing these optimizations, the simulation showed greatly improved NVH performance. Physical testing confirmed these results, showing very strong correlation with the simulation and validating the design. This successful collaboration with Hexagon gave Wikov the confidence to sign off on the prototype, meeting their customer's critical noise requirement.
