A Hexagon Case Study
New River Kinematics, an aerospace manufacturing company, sought an alternative to expensive and inflexible methods for drilling precise Determinate Assembly hole patterns. Their challenge was to achieve the required aerospace tolerances with a system capable of adapting to design and process changes. They partnered with vendor Hexagon, utilizing their SpatialAnalyzer software, a Leica laser tracker, and a T-Mac sensor.
Hexagon's solution involved integrating a robot with their metrology hardware and SpatialAnalyzer software to create a closed-loop "Move-Measure-Correct" system. This solution provided real-time feedback to calibrate the robot and precisely control the position of the drill head. The results showed a dramatic improvement in precision, with the technique being approximately 40 times more accurate than using the robot's standard kinematics, successfully meeting the stringent aerospace tolerances.
